2024 Paris Badminton Tournament: Loh Kean Yew Advances to Last 16 for the First Time
Loh Kean Yew has made history. After being eliminated in the group stage during his Olympic debut three years ago, the Singaporean badminton star secured a spot in the last 16 at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a straight-sets victory over Uriel Canjura on Wednesday, July 31.
In another exciting match at the La Chapelle Arena, Loh defeated the Salvadoran debutant Canjura with scores of 21-13, 21-16. Canjura was the first player from his country to qualify for the Olympics.
“I’ve never reached the knockout stages before,” said the former world champion following his second win here. “So, this achievement itself is significant.
“For my legacy and accomplishments, this is already a lot. Every match from now on brings me closer to a medal.”
While Canjura had his moments, Loh never faced any real danger in the match.
Loh will face Li Shifeng of the People’s Republic of China in the next round. Loh’s career record against Li stands at 4-2, with Li winning their only encounter this year in May.
But no matter who Loh faces next, he remains composed.
“I will do my best to prepare thoroughly and fight for every point,” he said. “The most important thing for us is to enjoy every point of every match. As long as we give our all on the court, we won’t have any regrets.”
At 27 years old, Loh Kean Yew is entering his prime, and expectations are high for his performance on the grandest stage. However, he does not let on about his desire for a medal—just that it is not quite there yet.
“At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, I played two matches but was eliminated,” Loh said. “I’m pleased to reach the top 16, so I hope to play more matches.
“Every failure will certainly bring disappointment and sadness, but that’s part of life. We just keep moving forward, stay focused, and do our best.”
