Rexy Mainaky Apologizes for Not Achieving Gold Medal Goal, Plans to Start Preparation for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Early

National team coach Rexy Mainaky has apologized for not achieving the gold medal goal for the badminton team but has indicated that he does not plan to leave Malaysia anytime soon.

Upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, Rexy stated that he has never considered leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

“I have no plans to go elsewhere. I still have responsibilities to BAM, and I also have a home here,” Rexy said.

“If my contract with BAM expires and they are willing to renew it, then I will stay,” he added.

The Malaysian badminton team returned from the Paris Olympics with two bronze medals, won by men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia and the men’s doubles pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Rexy noted that the focus is now on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

He admitted his disappointment at the team’s failure to achieve the gold medal target but had no complaints about the athletes’ performances in Paris.

“As a coach, I apologize for not meeting the goal, but I am satisfied with our athletes’ performances,” Rexy said.

“We need to start preparing for the next Olympics now, rather than waiting until the year before.”

He continued, “We did the right things in Paris, and we will continue to do so while improving on our shortcomings.”
