Canada Competition: Chinese team lost all their matches; Naraoka Gong Oyasu Toson went out in the cold

On the morning of 6 July, the 2024 Canadian Open Quarterfinals came to a close with Shuliang/Zhang Chi losing to Suzu Iwanaga/Gueiying Nakanishi, and the Chinese badminton team was “all but wiped out”. The men’s singles match was full of cold streaks, with players such as Ando Mori and Naraoka Kondo all losing their matches. Below is a brief report of the tournament:
Shuliang/Zhang Chi battled with Japanese pair Suzu Iwanaga/Takae Nakanishi and lost 17-21, 21-13, 11-21 in three sets to miss out on the semi-finals. The latter will next face Mounwang/Kanlaha, who won their first-ever match against each other with a 21-12, 21-17 victory over Evreux/McPherson.
Priyasu picked up his first win in the tournament with a thrilling 21-11, 17-21, 21-19 win over Danish star Andersen and will next face French newcomer Ranier, who avenged last year’s Said Modi International defeat by defeating Nishimoto 21-17, 21-17 in straight sets.
Kohaku Watanabe took revenge for his second straight loss with a 90-minute 21-18, 16-21, 21-11 win over Konda Naraoka to reach the semi-finals, where he will meet Yukushi Tanaka, who has been in excellent form of late, and won his first ever match against Ron Ng, 21-17, 23-21.
Okuhara advanced to the semifinals with a 21-18, 21-9 win over Minqi Hsu, making it six in a row, and will battle Jacksfield for a spot in the finals, who made it three in a row with a 21-17, 24-22 win over Renpei Nayuki.
Busanan 21-12, 15-21, 21-19 Li Wenshan advanced to the semifinals, winning two straight matches. She will face Zhang Beiwen in the semifinals, who beat Lauren Lin 21-19, 21-9 in 28 minutes to make it 2 wins in a row.
Astrup/Anders beat Andreas/Jasper 27-25, 21-13 to reach the semifinals and win their second consecutive match. They will fight for a place in the final against Yohki Okamura/Kenya Mihashi, who won their first match against Christopher/Matthew 21-13, 21-15.
Mathias/Boer won 21-18, 21-14 against Pakkapo/Moonwang to reach the semi-finals, picking up their first win in the encounter. In the semi-finals, they will face Loo Myung Chul/Hong Eun Chee, who won their first-ever match against Presley/Lee Allison 21-14, 21-16 in 29 minutes.
