Xia Yu Ting

Character Introduction

Xia Yuting is a Chinese badminton player who won the women’s doubles title at the 2018 World Junior Badminton Championships and the women’s doubles title at the 2019 Austrian Badminton Challenge.

Xia Yuting was often sick when she was young, and her father, Xia Haiping, always tried to improve her child’s physical fitness, and she started practising badminton with the aim of ‘strengthening her body’. When Xia Yuting was 6 years old, she met Liu Wei, who was the head coach of the badminton team at the Gaochun District Junior Sports School. Liu Wei thought that Xia Yuting’s ‘eyes revealed a wit that surpassed that of her peers’ and suggested to Xia Haiping that she try badminton. Through a year of initiation training, Xia Yuting’s ‘strong concentration and willingness to work hard’ made Liu Wei decide to formally bring her into the Gaochun District Junior Sports School for training.

After just two years of playing, Xia Yuting got the first place in the city tournament and the first place in the provincial tournament after four years of practice. At the age of 12, Xia Yuting placed first in the provincial team conditioning tournament. Between studying and taking the path of a professional athlete, she ultimately chose to continue playing and received support from her father, Xia Haiping. Xia Haiping has always been very demanding of Xia Yuting, and when she met the provincial team on holiday, she was sent to the Gaochun District Junior Sports School to keep up her training.

In 2019, Xia Yuting finally officially became a member of the national team. After entering the national team, Xia Yuting was spotted by Guo Zhendong, the coach of the women’s doubles team, and formed a doubles team with Hunan junior Liu Xuanxuan.

On 11 September 2021, in the 14th National Games Women’s Badminton Team Competition, Jiangsu got the second place, and in the second women’s doubles match Hubei sent Du Yue/Li Yinhui, who played against Jiangsu’s Tang Jinhua/Xia Yuting.

On 20 October 2021, the Uber Cup World Women’s Badminton Team Championships ended in Denmark, with the Chinese women’s team winning the title with a 3-1 victory over Japan. 2000-born Nanjing athlete Xia Yuting took part in the tournament, and became the tenth Nanjing Badminton World Champion, as well as the 35th World Champion in Nanjing.

On 2 November 2021, she was selected for the ‘China Badminton World Championships’. In December, Liu Xuanxuan/Xia Yuting, who were playing in the World Championships for the first time, lost 1-2 to the world No.21 Indian team Ponampa/Ski, and did not reach the round of 16.
