Sony Dwi Kuncoro

Character Introduction

Sony Kuncoro (July 7, 1984), born in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, is an Indonesian badminton player.

Sony Kuncoro defeated Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei in the semifinals of the 2000 World Junior Badminton Championships, but lost to China’s Bao Chunlai to win the silver medal.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Kuncoro reached the semifinals and lost to Son Seung-mo of South Korea, before defeating Boonsak Posana of Thailand in the bronze medal match.

At the 2007 World Badminton Championships in Malaysia, Kuncoro was the runner-up, losing to Lin Dan in the final in straight sets 11-21, 20-22.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Kuncoro lost to rising Malaysian star Lee Chong Wei in the last eight.

In August 2013, Sonny Kuncoro competed in the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, China, as the 10th seed in the men’s singles event, but exited the tournament with a 0-2 (22-24, 16-21) loss to Singapore’s Huang Ziliang in the first round.

After not participating in tournaments for more than a year due to an old injury, Soni reached the main draw in 2016 from the Singapore Open Badminton qualifiers and knocked out Sho Sasaki of Japan, Wang Wiming of China and Lin Dan along the way to win the title, defeating Son Wan-ho of South Korea 2-1 (21-16, 12-21, 21-14) in the final.

In August 2017, Soni participated in the World Badminton Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, playing in the men’s singles event. He advanced in the first round with a 2-0 win over Czech Milan Ludik, but went out in the second round 0-2 (13-21, 9-21) against the 5th seed, Chen Long of China.
