Tan Boon Heong

Character Introduction

Tan Boon Heong (September 18, 1987), born in Alor Setar, Kedah, is a Malaysian male badminton player. His doubles team with Koo Kin Kiat is known as the Diamond Team.

Tan Boon Hong started his career as a doubles partner with Yun Tian Hao, and the duo won the 2004 World Youth Championships.

However, as the Doha Asian Games approached in 2006, the coach of the Malaysian national badminton team decided to change Chen Wenhong’s partner to Ku Jianjie, and the new pair immediately did well in the Asian Games, beating the best doubles players from various countries (including China’s Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng and Indonesia’s Malkis Kiddo/Hendra Setiawan) and eventually winning the gold medal. They then went on to win major tournaments such as the 2007 Malaysian Open, the All England Open Badminton Championships and the Swiss Open Badminton Championships. The successive victories made the then Malaysian national team doubles coach, Mr. Meinaki, comment that they were “a team that shines like diamonds”, and the name “Diamonds” eventually spread and is still in use today.

In August 2010, Tan Boon Hong and Koo Kien Keat competed in the Men’s Doubles event at the Badminton World Championships in Paris, winning the second place; in November of the same year, Tan represented Malaysia at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the Men’s Doubles (with Koo Kien Keat) and the Men’s Teams events, winning the Men’s Doubles Silver Medal. On July 28, 2013, YONEX invited Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, Chan Boon Hong and Kenichi Tan to test the limits of their new racquets. In the end, the left-handed Chen Wenhong used the racket, which was specially developed for extreme kills, to hit a new world record of 493km/h, which was certified by the Guinness World Record, and became the current badminton kill world record holder, with a kill speed of 493km/h.

At the beginning of 2017, Chen Wenhong began pairing up with Indonesian star Hendra Setiawan in the men’s doubles, with the goal of being able to qualify for the World Championships to be held in the middle of the year.

In 2018, Hendra received a solicitation from the Indonesian Badminton Association and returned to the Indonesian national team again to work with his former partner Muhammad Ahsan, while Chen Wenhong declined an invitation from the Malaysian national badminton team due to sponsorship issues, but still showed his willingness to represent his country in major tournaments such as the Thomas Cup.
