Angus Ng Ka Long
Character Introduction
Ng Ka Long (伍家朗), Hong Kong male badminton player.
Ng Ka Long began playing badminton at the age of 6 and later received professional training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. After graduating from high school, he turned to professional sports full-time.
Ng Ka Long was born into a middle-class family; his father is a dentist, his mother is a secretary, and he has a younger brother. His father, who loves badminton, took him to play at Choi Hung Road Playground every week from the age of 5. However, during his time at Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School, he was more interested in table tennis and was a member of the school’s table tennis team by the third grade, representing the school in competitions. During an off-campus competition, he saw classmates playing badminton and became fascinated, which sparked his passion for the sport and he decided to switch from table tennis to badminton.
In 2006, he entered Diocesan Boys’ School and was selected to receive professional training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. The coaching team believed he had the potential to reach world-class levels, and they persuaded him to become a full-time athlete when he was in Form 3. However, this was postponed due to his parents’ opposition. After graduating from high school, he became a full-time player with his parents’ support.
In 2010, Ng Ka Long competed in the World Junior Badminton Championships held in Mexico, and together with Li Junhui, reached the men’s doubles semifinals but eventually lost 1-2 (21-17, 15-21, 11-21) to Malaysian opponents, winning a bronze medal. This was the best result for the Hong Kong team in the World Junior Championships.
In 2011, Ng Ka Long competed in the 7th China Urban Games badminton competition held in Yichun, Jiangxi, where he defeated Chinese newcomers such as Huang Yuxiang and Guo Kai to win the men’s singles gold medal.
On November 17, 2017, in the men’s singles quarterfinals of the China Open, the 23-year-old Hong Kong player Ng Ka Long defeated Lee Chong Wei in three games with a score of 21-19. Previously, Lee Chong Wei had won all five encounters with Ng Ka Long.
