Antonsen Secures Comeback Win in Exciting Rematch

The third day of the China Open 2024 witnessed three European pairs advancing to the quarterfinals, with Anders Antonsen claiming a satisfying victory in a thrilling rematch from last year.

The day was marked by challenging and hard-fought matches as players battled for a spot in the quarterfinals. Among the standout performances, three European pairs and one singles player successfully progressed to the next stage.

The Danish duo of Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, seeded second, made a strong comeback after an early exit in last week’s post-Olympic event, delivering a solid performance in the Round of 16. Eighth seeds Rasmus Kjær/Frederik Søgaard also shone, defeating fellow Europeans Ben Lane/Sean Vendy. Additionally, the newly formed partnership of Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund, which has only been in action for three months, continued to impress with another victory.

One of the day’s key moments was Anders Antonsen securing a win, avenging his defeat to Loh Kean Yew in last year’s tournament at the same stage. “Last year, in this same round, Loh beat me easily, so I’m really happy to have taken my revenge today,” shared Antonsen, who triumphed in a three-game battle, winning 21-12, 9-21, 21-18.

As the tournament heads into the quarterfinals tomorrow, the European players will continue their pursuit of crucial wins, keeping their hopes for a medal alive.
