Ardy Bernardus Wiranata

Character Introduction

Ardy Bernardus Wiranata (Indonesian: Ardy Bernardus Wiranata, born February 10, 1970) is a retired Indonesian badminton player, widely regarded as one of Indonesia’s top players, following in the footsteps of previous greats such as Liem Swie King and Icuk Sugiarto.

Ardy was born into a badminton family in Jakarta, Indonesia. His father was the vice president of the Indonesian Badminton Association. As a child, Ardy developed an interest in badminton despite his small stature, and he began his training at a local badminton club at the age of 9. At 14, he won the Indonesian National Junior Singles Championship, and by 17, he represented Indonesia at the World Junior Badminton Championships, where he claimed the singles title.

Under the guidance of China’s coach Tong Sin Fu, Ardy’s skills improved rapidly. In 1989, he won the China Open by defeating Chinese badminton legend Xiong Guobao. Later that year, he finished as the runner-up in the men’s singles at the World Badminton Championships, losing to Yang Yang from China.

In 1992, Ardy achieved his career-high moment at the Barcelona Olympics, where he won a silver medal in men’s singles, losing to Indonesia’s legendary Alan Budikusuma in the final. He also won the All England title in 1991 and many other prestigious tournaments throughout the 1990s, including several Indonesian Open, Japan Open, and Southeast Asian Games titles.

In 1998, during the All England Open, Ardy moved to the United States, where he transitioned to a coaching career. He has since helped bring former Indonesian stars like Halim Haryanto and Tony Gunawan to coach in the U.S.
