Beiwen ZHANG

Character Introduction

Zhang Beiwen, an American badminton player, was born on July 12, 1990.

Zhang originally hails from Liaoning, China. In 2003, she moved to Singapore and became a permanent resident in January 2006. She officially became a Singaporean citizen in May 2007.

In April 2008, Zhang left the Singapore national badminton team due to disagreements with the head women’s singles coach, Wang Junjie. She played internationally on her own but returned to the national team in late October of the same year.

In 2012, while on a trip to the United States, Zhang participated in the U.S. Open and decided to continue her career in the U.S.

In January 2018, Zhang competed in the India Open, reaching the final. She faced the tournament’s top seed, P. V. Sindhu of India, who was determined to win at home. After a thrilling three-game match, Zhang pulled off an upset with a 2-1 victory (21-18, 11-21, 22-20) to claim her first career Super Series title in women’s singles.

On July 29, 2021, during the Tokyo Olympics, Zhang played against He Bingjiao in the women’s singles round of 16. After winning the first game 21-14, Zhang was leading 9-7 in the second game when she suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and had to retire from the match.
