Cheung Ngan Yi

Character Introduction

Cheung Ngan Yi (born April 27, 1993) is a female badminton player from Hong Kong, China. She graduated from Tak Nga Primary School and Diocesan Girls’ School.

In August 2017, Cheung Ngan Yi participated in the World Badminton Championships held in Glasgow, Scotland. In the third round, she faced the 4th seed, P. V. Sindhu from India, and lost in a close match 1-2 (21-19, 21-23, 17-21), ending her run in the round of 16.

In 2009, at just 15 years old, Cheung Ngan Yi won the runner-up title in the women’s singles senior division at the Hong Kong Badminton Championships.

In 2011, after graduating from Secondary 5, Cheung Ngan Yi became a professional athlete. Head coach He Yiming of the Hong Kong Badminton Team remarked that she had good potential and conditions, and her technical skills were comprehensive, though she still needed to improve her mental strength and foundational skills.

In February 2015, Cheung Ngan Yi competed in the Austrian Open, where she defeated three seeded players along the way. She won her first senior international title by defeating Bulgarian player Linda Zetchiri 21-16, 21-8 in the women’s singles final.

In October 2016, Cheung Ngan Yi competed in the Denmark Premier Super Series. She reached the semifinals, where she faced the 5th seed, Tai Tzu Ying, and narrowly lost 1-2 (13-21, 22-20, 18-21) after a hard-fought match. This was her best performance in a top-tier Super Series event at that time.
