Humans of Shuttle Time: Marc Mercurio

In this edition of BWF’s Shuttle Time Humans, we get to know Marc Mercurio, the Shuttle Time National Coordinator for Germany.

“I grew up in a small town near Frankfurt and was very active in my youth, whether it was with family, friends, or club sports.

I played badminton, tennis, and handball from a young age until adulthood. Eventually, I turned to American football, trying out a completely new sport and competing in various leagues and levels until last year.

I have only been working with the German Badminton Association for a few months before becoming the National Coordinator for Shuttle Time.

Badminton Experience Since I have been involved in para-badminton and educational work, I have quickly accumulated experience in these two fields. In recent years, I have worked in the field of disability sports, so I am particularly passionate about providing opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in para-badminton, while promoting sports and physical activity for this target group.

I have been warmly welcomed and feel like I have returned to my roots. Events such as the German Para-Badminton Championships and the German National Team European Team Championships qualifiers have left the deepest impressions on me because I have been able to build enthusiastic and friendly relationships.

Badminton and Me Returning to my roots! In Germany, badminton is not just my job but a sport I am relearning to appreciate, and my passion for it is growing by the day.

Badminton is fast-paced and varied. For me, the biggest appeal of badminton lies in the ever-changing nature of the game, where players can execute a variety of shots with precision in a short period.

Prospects of the Shuttle Time Era Shuttle Time provides an excellent opportunity to integrate badminton into school sports and greatly assists teachers in organizing corresponding classes.

Due to the different school curricula in Germany’s 16 federal states, promoting badminton nationwide is a challenge. Therefore, there are often subtle but significant differences in the way and extent to which sports are taught. Ensuring that badminton receives proper attention in school sports is not always easy.

But this is where Shuttle Time can be utilized to provide the best support for badminton teaching and inspire teachers’ enthusiasm for our sport.”
