Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo


Character Introduction

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (August 2, 1996) is an Indonesian male badminton player who specializes in men’s doubles. He is nicknamed the “Little Yellow Man” by his fans.

In 2013, Sukamuyo was the runner-up in the mixed doubles at the World Junior Badminton Championships.

In March 2014, Sukamuyor won his first international professional title at the Vietnam International Challenger with Sylvanus Gayle, defeating the No. 2 seeds Robin Middleton/Ross Smith of Australia 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) in the men’s doubles final.

In April 2014, the two of them paired up again for the New Zealand Badminton Grand Prix, defeating the tournament’s No. 2 seeds, Chen Honglin/Lu Jiabin of Chinese Taipei, 2-1 (15-21, 23-21, 21-11) in the men’s doubles final to claim their first international Golden Grand Prix title.

In 2015, Sukamuyo began partnering with Marcus Fernaldi Gideon in men’s doubles. in October, the duo played in the Chinese Taipei Badminton Golden Grand Prix, defeating the tournament’s No. 4 seed, Yun Tianhao/Lim Chin Hwa of Malaysia, 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) in the men’s doubles final to claim the pair’s first International Golden Grand Prix title together.

In March 2016, Sukamuyor partnered with Gideon at the Badminton India Superseries, defeating teammates Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Sewardy 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) in the men’s doubles final, the first International Superseries title for the pair together. In June of the same year, the duo played in the Australian Badminton Super Series and won the Men’s Doubles final, defeating teammates Anga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Sewardi 2-0 (21-14, 21-15). In November of the same year, the duo played in China’s premier badminton super tournament, defeating Denmark’s Mathias Bowie/Karsten Mogensen 2-0 (21-18, 22-20) in the men’s doubles final to win the title.

In March 2017, Sukamuyo and Gideon played in the All England Badminton Premier Superseries, winning their first All England title by sweeping China’s Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) in the men’s doubles final. After winning the title, the duo ascended to the men’s doubles world No. 1 spot in the March 16 Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings with 73,051 points.

In September 2017, they played in the Japan Badminton Superseries. In the final, they faced the hosts, Takuto Inoue/Yuki Kaneko of Japan, and dominated the men’s doubles with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) victory.

In November 2017, they played in the China Badminton Premier Super Tournament. In the final, they took on the tournament’s No. 2 seed and Denmark’s top duo, Mathias Bowie/Karsten Mogensen, and continued their strong performance to successfully win their second consecutive title in the event 2-0 (21-19, 21-11).

In December 2017, they played in the WTF Super Series Finals. At the end of 2017, Sukamuyor and his partner Gideon were voted “WBF Male Athlete of the Year”.

In March 2018, they competed in the All England Badminton Open. In the final, against the tournament’s second seed and top Danish duo Mathias Bowie/Karsten Mogensen, they put in a strong performance to defeat two of Europe’s strongest duos in a row 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) and exceeded the world rankings by 100,000 points in the following week to maintain the men’s doubles world No. 1 position with the highest number of points ever.

The men’s doubles badminton final at the Jakarta Asian Games on August 28, 2018, between two Indonesian pairs, ended with top seeds Gideon/Sukamuyo upsetting teammates Alfian/Adianto 2-1 to win their first-ever men’s doubles title at the Games, while the Indonesian men’s doubles made it three consecutive Asian Games titles.

On July 29, 2021, at the Tokyo Olympics badminton men’s doubles match, Gideon/Sukamuyo were defeated by Malaysia’s Su Wei-Yi/Xie Dingfeng 0-2 and did not qualify for the semifinals.
