Kim So Yeong


Character Introduction

Kim Soo-yeong (Hangul: 김소영, July 9, 1992) is a South Korean female badminton player.

In July 2013, Kim represented South Korea at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, winning gold medals in women’s doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team. In November of the same year, she competed in the Korea Badminton Golden Grand Prix with Jang Ye Na and Kim Ki Jung, defeating teammates Go My Roh/Yoo Hae Won, the No. 2 seed in the women’s doubles final, 2-0 (21-15, 21-12), to win the international tournament and her first Golden Grand Prix women’s doubles title.

In September 2019, Kim Cho-yeong and Kong Hee-yong played in the Korea Open Badminton Championships, defeating tournament No. 6 seed and World Championships third-place finishers Lee Sau-hee/Shin Seung-chan 2-1 (13-21, 21-19, 21-17) in the women’s doubles final to win the tournament’s only title for the hosts.

In July 2021, she and Kong Xiyong competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Women’s Doubles Badminton Tournament, finishing second in Group D and defeating the Japanese duo of Matsumoto Mayu/Nagahara Wakona 2-1 (21-14, 14-21, 28-26) in the last eight, and then falling to the Chinese duo of Chen Qingcheng/Jia Yifan in the quarterfinals, 0-2 (15-21, 11-21), before winning bronze in the bronze medal match. In the bronze medal match, they defeated teammates Li Shaoxi/Shin Seung-chan 2-0 (21-10, 21-17) to win the bronze medal.

In March 2023, Kim Cho-Young and Kong Hee-Yong teamed up to play in the All England Open Badminton Championships, and won their first All-England Women’s Doubles title with a 2-0 victory over teammates Lee Sau-hee/Baek Ha-Na in the final.
