Character Introduction

Ko Sung-hyun (Korean: 고성현, May 21, 1987) is a South Korean male badminton player who plays doubles.

In November 2007, Ko Sung-hyun competed in the Vietnam Grand Prix badminton tournament with Kwak Gyu, and won the international men’s doubles title in the men’s doubles final, defeating compatriot Cao Jianyu/Kang Myeong Won 2-0 (21-17, 21-12), his first Grand Prix men’s doubles title.

In April 2008, Ko Sung Hyun competed in the Osaka Badminton International Challenger with Kwak Koo and Kim Min Jung, and won the International Men’s Doubles title and his first International Challenger Men’s Doubles title, defeating the hosts Kawaguchi Shinshi/Kawamae Naoki 2-0 (21-11, 21-16) in the Men’s Doubles final.

In March 2009, Ko Sung-hyun and Ha Jeong-eun played in the All England Badminton Premier Tournament, and lost the Mixed Doubles Final 1-2 (21-13, 15-21, 9-21) to the No.3 seeds of the tournament, He Hanbin/Yu Yang of China.

In March 2010, Ko Sung Hyun and Yoo Yeon Seong competed in the Swiss Badminton Superseries, and won the International Men’s Doubles Championship and his first Superseries Men’s Doubles Championship by defeating Malaysian pair Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Hong in the Men’s Doubles Final, 2-0 (21-18, 21-16), the No.1 seed of the tournament.

In November 2010, Ko represented Korea at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the Men’s Doubles (with Yoo Yeon Seong), Mixed Doubles (with Ha Jeong Eun) and Men’s Team events, winning the Men’s Team Silver Medal.

In July 2013, Ko Sung-hyun represented Korea at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, winning gold medals in mixed team and men’s doubles.

In August 2013, Ko participated in the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, China, where he and Lee Yong Dae were seeded first in the Men’s Doubles event. They missed the first round, then beat the Danish pair 2-0 in the second round, but lost in the third round to 13th seeded Chinese Taipei’s Lee Seung-mu/Tsai Chia-hsin 1-2 (21-14, 14-21, 19-21) in the round of 16.

In August 2014, Ko Sung-hyun represented South Korea at the World Badminton Championships in Ballerup Borough, Denmark, where he and Shin Baek-che played in the men’s doubles. They defeated the tournament’s No. 2 seed and compatriots Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong of Korea 2-1 (22-20, 21-23, 21-18) in a three-set final battle, marking the pair’s first ever men’s doubles World Championships win, as well as the honor of winning a world title individually.

In September 2014, Ko Sung Hyun represented South Korea at the Asian Games badminton tournament held in his home country, helping South Korea win its first ever men’s team gold medal at Asia’s highest-level tournament.

In June 2014, Ko Sung-hyun and Shin Baek-cheol played in the Indonesia Badminton Premier Superseries and won the Premier Superseries men’s doubles title by defeating the tournament’s No. 8 seeds, Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan of China, 2-1 (21-16, 16-21, 21-19) in the men’s doubles final.

In November 2018, Ko Sung-hyun and Yim Hye-won played in the Korea Badminton Masters, winning the Super 300 mixed doubles title by defeating compatriots Hyung Rate-kyu/Shin Sung-chan 2-1 (21-12, 15-21, 21-18) in the mixed doubles final.
