Character Introduction

Liliana Natsir (September 9, 1985), a Chinese Indonesian, is a retired Indonesian female badminton player specializing in mixed doubles; she won the 2008 Beijing Olympic mixed doubles silver medal, the 2016 Rio Olympic mixed doubles gold medal, and the World Badminton Championships mixed doubles title four times (2005 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2017), she is the second female athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for Indonesia after the famous Wang Lianxiang.

In October 2002, Liliana Nasir represented Indonesia in the World Junior Badminton Championships in Pretoria, South Africa, in the first team event. Indonesia won the bronze medal; in addition, she won third place in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles with Devi Sukma Wijaya and Marquise Kido respectively.

In August 2005, Liliana Nasir participated in the World Badminton Championships in Anaheim, Orange County, California, USA, where she and Nova Widianto played in the mixed doubles event. In the final, facing the 11th seed of the tournament, China’s Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen, after three sets of competition to defeat their opponents 2-1 (13-15, 15-8, 15-2), the two men for the Indonesian badminton world to create a new history, became the first Indonesian team to win the tournament, but also she won the title of World Champion.

In October 2006, she and Nova Widianto competed in the Badminton World Cup in Yiyang, Hunan, China, where they finished second in the group stage, swept Zhang Jun/Gao Diamond of China 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) in the semifinals, and beat Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen of China 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) in the finals, the first Indonesian team ever to win the event. She was also the first Indonesian team ever to win the event.

In June 2008, she competed in the Indonesia Badminton Superseries with Vita Marisa and Nova Widianto, and won the Women’s Doubles Final with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) win over Japan’s Misun Maeda/Satsuko Suezuna, who were seeded 3rd in the tournament.

In August 2008, she represented Indonesia in the mixed doubles event of the Olympic badminton tournament in Beijing, China, playing as the top seed with Nova Widianto. In the final, she lost the gold medal in straight sets 0-2 (11-21, 17-21) to the dark horse Korean new and old pair of Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung.

In August 2009, she represented Indonesia at the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad, India, where she and Nova Widianto played in the mixed doubles event. In the final, again facing the tournament’s No. 7 seed and another Danish team, Thomas Rebhorn/Camilla Rütter Juhl, they were defeated in straight sets, 0-2 (13-21, 17-21), to win the second place.

In March 2012, she played in the All England Badminton Premier Superseries with Tontowi Ahmed and won the mixed doubles final, defeating the tournament’s 8th seeds, Thomas Rebhorn/Camilla Rütter Juhl of Denmark, 2-0 (21-17, 21-19).

In March 2013, Liliana Nasir and Tontowi Ahmed played in the All England Badminton Premier Superseries, defeating the tournament’s No. 5 seed, Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China, 2-0 (21-13, 21-17) in the mixed doubles final to achieve their second consecutive All England Championships event.

In August 2013, she participated in the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, where she and Tontowi Ahmed played in the mixed doubles event. In the final, facing the tournament’s No. 1 seeds Xu Chen/Ma Jin of China, the two teams fought a three-set battle, winning this one at the last crucial moment. They performed consistently to take the match point 2-1 (21-13, 16-21, 22-20) to win the Mixed Doubles title.

In August 2016, she represented Indonesia in the Mixed Doubles event of the Olympic Games Badminton Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, playing as the No. 3 seed with Tontowi Ahmad. In the final, again facing the previous group stage Malaysia’s Tan Beng Soon / Goh Liu Ying , won the match 2-0 (21-14, 21-12) without any doubt, winning the first Olympic mixed doubles gold medal for Indonesia.

In August 2017, Liliana Nasir competed with Tontowi Ahmad in the mixed doubles event at the World Championships. She and Tontowi Ahmad played as the No. 3 seed, and in the final, they faced the tournament Chinese duo in a three-set battle to take down their opponents 2-1 (15-21, 21-16, 21-15), winning the World Championships title again after four years, and also being the best duo among the Indonesian badminton world.

Liliana Nasir announced her official retirement after the January 2019 Indonesia Masters.

After her retirement, Nasir said she has no intention of joining the Indonesian Badminton Federation as a coach or a staff member, and that she will stay away from badminton for a while and focus on businesses such as spa, real estate and exchange business.
