Malaysian Badminton Star Lee Zii Jia Advances to Last 16 in Mens Singles at 2024 Paris Olympics

The 26-year-old Malaysian, Lee Zii Jia, advanced to the last 16 in the men’s singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics after a decisive win against Spanish player Pablo Abian in Group G on Wednesday, July 31st, with scores of 21-10, 21-13.


The round of 16 match will take place on Thursday, August 1st, with Lee Zii Jia, the seventh seed, well-rested after his first match on Sunday where he defeated Viren Nettasinghe 21-14, 21-12.

He commented, “So I think now I’m just trying to keep myself calm and not put too much pressure or tension on myself.”

Following his victory over Pablo Abian on Wednesday, Lee Zii Jia enters the knockout stages with confidence. Pablo Abian, a seasoned 39-year-old Spaniard, is competing in his fifth Olympics.

For Lee Zii Jia, this is his second Olympic appearance, coming three years after his previous exit in the round of 16. He made a strong impression against Pablo Abian.

Lee Zii Jia scored eight consecutive points to take the first game 21-10, but faced a tougher challenge thereafter.

Pablo Abian led 9-7 and 10-8 in the crowded La Chapelle Arena, winning the support of the audience. However, from then on, Lee Zii Jia took control of the match, never looking back after taking a 12-11 lead.
