Michael Fuchs

Character Introduction

Michael Fuchs, a German male badminton player.

Michael Fuchs started playing badminton at the age of 9. From 1991 to 2000, he played for the club “TV Marktheidenfeld” in Marktheidenfeld, and later joined “SV Fortuna Regensburg” and “VfB Friedrichshafen.” In 2003, Fuchs joined the club “1. BC Saarbrücken-Bischmisheim” in Saarbrücken, where he has played ever since. He later became a key member of the German national badminton team.

In October 2009, Michael Fuchs partnered with Ingo Kindervater to compete in the Dutch Grand Prix, reaching the men’s doubles final for the first time. Their opponents were also from Germany, marking the first time German players filled both slots in a Grand Prix doubles final. In the end, they lost 0-2 (15-21, 16-21) and finished as runners-up.

In July 2010, Fuchs partnered with Birgit Overzier (now Birgit Michels) in the U.S. Grand Prix Gold mixed doubles event, where they won the championship by defeating Taipei’s Lee Sheng-mu/Chien Yu-chin 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) in the final, becoming the first German pair to win a Grand Prix Gold title. In December of the same year, Fuchs and Overzier entered the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time.

In July 2012, Fuchs and Michels represented Germany in the mixed doubles event at the London Olympic Games. In the group stage, they lost their first match to the top seeds, China’s Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei, but won their next two matches, defeating Britain’s Chris Adcock/Imogen Bankier and Russia’s Alexandr Nikolaenko/Valeria Sorokina, advancing to the quarterfinals as the second-ranked team in their group. In the quarterfinals, they faced the third seeds, Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, but lost 0-2 (15-21, 9-21), exiting in the quarterfinals. This was the best result for the German team in Olympic badminton history.

In August 2013, Fuchs participated in the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, China, where he and Michels, seeded 12th in the mixed doubles event, had a bye in the first round but were eliminated in the second round after losing 1-2 (21-13, 14-21, 18-21) to Russia’s Vitalij Durkin/Nina Vislova.

In August 2016, Michael Fuchs represented Germany in the mixed doubles event at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, partnering with Birgit Michels as the 12th seeds. In the group stage, they lost all three matches to Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto, China’s Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei, and Hong Kong’s Lee Chun Hei/Chau Hoi Wah, and failed to advance to the knockout stage.
