Character Introduction
Neville Sena, born March 17, 1990, in Hyderabad, India, is a professional Indian badminton player representing the Hyderabad Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy.
Her parents, Dr. Harvir Singh and Usha Rani, are both badminton players. Influenced by them, she was introduced to badminton at a young age and participated in her first tournament in Hyderabad at the age of 9 (May 1999). In 2003, Neville began her international career by competing in the European Youth Circuit (Denmark and Germany). By 2006, she had made her mark in adult tournaments, winning the 2006 Philippine Open, becoming the first Indian to win a four-star badminton event.
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Neville helped the Indian team secure a bronze medal in mixed doubles. Additionally, she won India’s first women’s singles gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, contributing to India’s total of 38 gold medals and ranking second overall, surpassing England.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Neville made an impressive debut, reaching the quarterfinals by defeating Hong Kong’s Wang Chen 2-1 (21-19, 11-21, 21-11) but was eventually eliminated by Indonesia’s Maria Kristin Yulianti (28-26, 14-21, 15-21).
In the 2012 London Olympics, Neville reached the women’s singles semifinals but was defeated by Wang Yihan of China. In the bronze medal match, China’s Wang Xin, who had won the first game, was forced to withdraw due to a ligament tear, allowing Neville to win and earn India’s first badminton medal.
In August 2013, Neville competed in the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, China, as the 3rd seed in women’s singles. She reached the quarterfinals but lost 0-2 (21-23, 9-21) to 13th seed Pai Yu-po of South Korea.
She received the Padma Bhushan medal in 2016, a third-level civilian honor in India, and has also been awarded top honors such as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Neville won the women’s singles title by defeating her protégé, P.V. Sindhu, 2-1 in the final.
