Character Introduction

Pai Hsiao Ma (born May 7, 1986), originally named Bai Min-jie, is a female badminton player from Chinese Taipei.

She has a younger sister, Bai Yu-po (originally Bai Yi-jie), who is also a badminton player and singles specialist. Bai Yu-po is currently a sports teacher at Kang Hsuan International School.

Pai Hsiao Ma began playing badminton at a young age and gained some recognition during high school, but she often fell short of winning championships. In 2008, she took a year and a half off due to injury. During this time, it was suggested that she and her sister change their names, which were given by their grandmother, to improve their future prospects. She decided to change her name from “Min-jie” to “Xiao-ma.”

In November 2010, Pai Hsiao Ma represented Chinese Taipei at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the women’s singles and women’s team events.

In July 2012, Pai Hsiao Ma competed in the US Badminton Open and won her first Grand Prix Gold title by defeating Japan’s Kaori Imabeppu 2-1 in the women’s singles final, setting a personal best.

In July 2013, Pai Hsiao Ma represented Chinese Taipei at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, and won a bronze medal in the mixed team event.

In August 2013, she participated in the World Badminton Championships held in Guangzhou, China, competing in the women’s singles. She won her first-round match 2-0 against Ireland’s Chloe Magee but was defeated 1-2 (17-21, 23-21, 11-21) by the 7th seed, China’s Wang Shixian, in the second round after an 83-minute battle.

In August 2014, Pai Hsiao Ma competed in the World Badminton Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, in the women’s singles. She won her first-round match 2-0 against Brazil’s Fabiana Silva but was eliminated in the second round, losing 0-2 (14-21, 15-21) to the 12th seed, China’s Han Li.
