Sameer Verma

Character Introduction

Hailing from Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, Samir Verma’s father Sudhir Verma is a local badminton coach and his brother Sharupa Verma is also a badminton player.

In July 2011, Samir Verma represented India at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Lucknow, India, where he won the bronze medal in the first mixed team event, while in the singles event, Samir Verma was defeated 0-2 (15-21, 17-21) by Malaysia’s Zulfari Zukifiri, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, to win the third place. In October of the same year, he again participated in the World Junior Badminton Championships in Taoyuan, Taiwan. In the singles event, Samir Verma was defeated by the tournament’s top seed, Viktor Assaldsen of Denmark, 0-2 (19-21, 19-21), winning the third place.

In February 2012, Samir Verma played in the Iran Badminton International Challenger and lost 0-2 (18-21, 15-21) to Sri Lanka’s Niluka Karunaratne, the No. 3 seed, in the final. In June of the same year, he was selected to participate in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, where Samir Verma won the third place in the singles event, defeating the No. 3 seed of the tournament, Kento Momota of Japan, 1-2 (21-13, 18-21, 9-21).

In November 2013, Samir Verma played in the Bahrain International Challenge and won his first ever International Challenge men’s singles title, defeating the tournament’s No. 6 seed and teammate Savankar Dey 2-1 (19-21, 21-14, 21-12) in the final.

In 2015, Samir Verma won back-to-back Bahrain International Series, Bahrain International Challenge and India International Challenge men’s singles titles, and was runner-up at the Sri Lanka International Challenge and Bangladesh International Challenge, and reached a new personal high of 46th in the world rankings during the year (December 17, 2015).

In November 2016, Samir Verma played in the Hong Kong Badminton Superseries and made it all the way from the qualifying rounds to the main draw; eliminating Japan’s Takuma Ueda, as well as Kazunori Sakai and Malaysia’s Zhang Weifeng. In the quarterfinals, Verma was able to overcome the 3rd seed of the tournament, Danish No.1 Jan O. Jorgensen, 2-0 (21-19, 23-22). In the final, the face has a home advantage, the host of the Ng Ka Long, the two sides fought three games to 1-2 (14-21, 21-10, 11-21) defeated the opponent, it is worth mentioning that this is also his first time to play into the super series of the quarterfinals of the best results.

In August 2017, Verma participated in the World Badminton Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, playing in the men’s singles event. He advanced in the first round due to the withdrawal of Spain’s Pablo Avian midway through the tournament, but went out in the second round 0-2 (20-22, 9-21) to 16th-seeded Rajiv Ouseph of England.

In February 2018, Samir Verma appeared at the Swiss Open Badminton Championships, winning the opener with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) sweep of Denmark’s good Jane O. Jorgensen in the final. In March of the same year, he played in the Orleans Masters Badminton Championships, where he lost 1-2 (21-18, 13-21, 12-21) in the semi-finals against the No. 4 seed of the tournament, Marc Kalju of the Netherlands.
