Spanish Badminton Federation President: Marin Should Be Awarded the Bronze Medal

Carolina Marin from Spain had to regretfully withdraw from the women’s singles semifinal match at the Paris Olympics due to injury. She has also confirmed that she will not be able to participate in the bronze medal match, leaving her without a medal. In response, the president of the Spanish Badminton Federation, Andoni Azurmendi, has publicly stated that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should award Marin the bronze medal.

At 31 years old, Marin has endured two severe knee injuries, but her resilience has allowed her to fight her way back to peak condition. She had a chance to compete for her second gold medal at the Paris Olympics. In today’s semifinal against China’s He Bingjiao, she won the first game but had to withdraw in the second game due to a recurring knee injury. Marin, heartbroken, knelt on the court and cried, showing how cruel fate can be.

Marin’s tearful display was heart-wrenching, prompting Azurmendi to post on social media. He said this is a very difficult moment for Marin and for all of Spain’s sports. “She was just one step away from reaching the Olympic final for the second time and was fighting for her second gold medal, but an injury took away her chance for a medal.”

Azurmendi went further to call on the IOC to award Marin a bronze medal, stating, “She truly deserves it.”
