Sung Ji Hyun
Character Introduction
Sung Ji Hyun (Korean: 성지현, July 29, 1991) is a South Korean badminton player, retired badminton women’s singles player, the highest world ranking No. 2, nicknamed “Princess Sung” by the media and fans in the Chinese-speaking world because of her father, the former head coach of the South Korean national team Sung Han-guk, and her mother, Kim Lian-chi, is also a former national team starter, and her husband is the national team men’s singles star Son Wan-ho. Her mother, Kim Lian-chi, is also a former national team starter, and her husband is Son Wan-ho, the national team’s men’s singles starter.
Influenced by her parents, she started practicing badminton at the age of 10 and won the National High School Badminton League four times. At the age of 15, she was already selected for the national youth team and joined the national team two years later.
In 2009, at the age of 18, Sung Ji Hyun competed in the Macau Open badminton tournament, defeating then world number one Zhou Mi in the last eight.
In January 2010, Sung Ji Hyun made her debut in the final of the Korea SuperSeries, but lost to Wang Shixian of China and finished second. In May of the same year, she and other Korean teammates defeated China in the Uber Cup final, not only winning the Uber Cup for the national team for the first time, but also winning her first world title, and in November, she represented Korea in the Asian Games in Guangzhou, competing in the women’s singles and women’s team events in the badminton tournament, winning the bronze medal in the women’s team. As national team veterans Bae Seung-hee and Hwang Hye-yun faded out, Sung Ji Hyun and Bae Yeon-shu gradually took over as the leaders of the Korean national badminton team.
In 2011, Sung Ji Hyun defeated Wang Xin 2-1 in the Korea Premier Super Tournament, then Wang Shixian 2-1 in the French Super Tournament, and at the end of the year, she defeated World Champion Wang Yihan in the Super Series Finals, making her one of the few players to win three major women’s singles matches against China in a row in a single year.
In 2012, Sung Ji Hyun represented South Korea in the women’s singles badminton event at the Olympic Games in London, England, and finished second in the group stage with one win and one loss, defeating Norway’s Sara Billingsley Kovareno 2-0 before losing to Hong Kong’s Yip Pui-yin Yip 0-2.
In July 2013, Sung Ji Hyun represented South Korea at the World University Games badminton tournament in Kazan, Russia, winning gold medals in women’s singles and mixed team.
In August 2015, Sung Ji Hyun competed in the World Badminton Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, where Sung Ji Hyun faced top seeded and defending Carolina Marin in the semifinals and lost 1-2 (17-21, 21-15, 16-21) after a hard fought battle for 1.5 hours, finishing only third.
In August 2016, Sung Ji Hyun represented South Korea for the second time in the women’s singles badminton event at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the quarterfinals, Sung Ji Hyun faced the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Carolina Marin of Spain, and she was defeated, 0-2 (12-21, 16-21), by her opponent.
On April 6, 2022, South Korean women’s singles star “Princess Sung” announced her retirement as a coach.
