    Carolina Marin Releases Training Video

Today, Olympic champion and Spanish badminton star Carolina Marin released a video updating fans on her current condition.

The short video shows that Marin is recovering well and is actively preparing for her return.

    Previous Update:

On August 4, 2024, the women’s singles semifinals at the Olympics concluded with Marin withdrawing due to injury, allowing He Bingjiao of China to advance to the final. An Se-young defeated Mariska 2-1 and will face He Bingjiao for the championship.

Once an Olympic champion and three-time World Champion, Marin displayed an impressive performance today, dominating the first game to win 21-14. In the second game, however, at 5-10, she fell after a jump smash and requested a medical timeout. Returning briefly, she fought on for two more minutes before collapsing at the court’s edge, visibly in pain and pounding the floor in frustration. Coaches and fans cheered her on, but she ultimately decided to withdraw.

Marin had previously undergone knee surgery right before the Tokyo Olympics, missing the event entirely. Later, she required surgery on her other knee, making her semifinals finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics even more impressive.

Many fans remarked on the similarity to the 2016 Rio Olympics, where Li Xuerui also injured her knee in a match against Marin and had to retire. Unlike the tension at that event, today He Bingjiao warmly embraced Marin after the match.

European players conclude World Youth Championship

Europe’s campaign at the YONEX BWF World Junior Championships 2024 concluded after the quarterfinals. The top-seeded mixed doubles pair, Tom Lalot Trescarte and Elsa Jacob (FRA), were the last European hopes, making their way from the Round of 128 before bowing out in the quarters.

The duo has had an impressive year, securing several titles, including the FZ FORZA Alpes International U19 2024 and the senior-level VICTOR Latvia International 2023.

The YONEX BWF World Junior Championships have long been a platform for future badminton stars, with past champions like Viktor Axelsen (DEN), Chen Yu Fei (CHN), Gregoria Tunjung (INA), Kunlavut Vitidsarn (THA), Kento Momota (JPN), and more.

Though no European players took home a title this time, the growing talent pool across Europe shows a promising future for the continent’s badminton scene.

Ratchanok Intanon: ‘I’LL GIVE IT TWO MORE YEARS’

After being hesitant to discuss her retirement plans, Ratchanok Intanon has now confirmed that she plans to stay on the badminton circuit for at least another two years.

She made the announcement at the LI-NING Hong Kong Open 2024, right after defeating Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, the same opponent who ended her Olympic Games run in the quarterfinals last month.

“Badminton has been nearly half of my life. Now, I just want to enjoy what remains of my career,” said the 29-year-old following her 21-12, 15-21, 21-10 victory, which advanced her to the quarterfinals of a Super 500 event for the first time since the Indonesia Masters in January.

“I don’t have high goals. I’ll aim for two more years, targeting the Asian Games (in Nagoya, Japan). I want to stay healthy and not put pressure on myself anymore. I want to keep smiling, even when the results don’t go my way.”

Intanon also shared that she had been focusing on muscle strengthening to deal with her left ankle issue, which had affected both her form and confidence. She chose this path instead of surgery.

“It’s been like a cycle. I had to withdraw last year (against Goh Jin Wei) at this same tournament. I feel I’m physically better now, not just compared to last year but also to the start of this year,” said the 2013 world champion.

“That’s because I’ve gained muscle through weight training, which has made me stronger. It might make me look heavier, but it has given me more power. I need strong ankles for my style of play.

“Choosing not to undergo surgery slowed the recovery, but it was the right decision.”

Intanon, who is set to face Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki next, is joined in the quarterfinals by fellow Thai players Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Pornpawee Chochuwong. Both won their matches in straight games, defeating Yeo Jia Min and Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi, respectively.

As a side note, Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn remains the only Thai player to have won the women’s singles title at this event, which she did in 2001.
