Toh Ee Wei suffered a fall during a gym workout, leading to the withdrawal of Malaysian mixed doubles champions Tan Kian Meng and Toh Ee Wei from the Arctic Open and Denmark Open.
The 24-year-old, who celebrated her birthday last week, had an accident at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) gym, resulting in a deep cut to her left arm that required 16 stitches.
As a result, the world No. 9 pair will miss the upcoming Arctic Open (October 8-13) and Denmark Open (October 15-20).
A Close Call for the Young Athlete
Fortunately, the injury is to her left arm, not her dominant playing hand.
“I feel lucky that the glass didn’t hit my head or my playing arm. However, I did suffer a second-degree muscle tear in my back,” said Toh Ee Wei.
She is currently resting at home in Bachang, Melaka, and her parents rushed to see her after hearing about the injury.
Toh and Tan Kian Meng were set to compete in the BWF World Tour Super 750 event at the Denmark Open from October 15-20, but their participation will depend on her recovery, which is expected to take two weeks.
Malaysian national coaching director Rexy Mainaky stated that Toh’s condition is stable, and she is being closely monitored by the medical team.
Tan Kian Meng and Toh Ee Wei have been in good form, reaching the quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics in August and winning the Korea Open Super 500 title.
In a surprising turn at the China Open, mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin defeated Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling-fang, ranked 13th in the world. The Malaysian duo, ranked 32nd, won 21-17, 21-16 in just 28 minutes at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou.
Pang Ron and Su Yin, who have only been playing together since November, managed to pressure their higher-ranked opponents by controlling the shuttle better. Despite their recent rise from 40th to 32nd after a strong performance at the Hong Kong Open, they acknowledge that they still have much to learn.
The pair will face compatriots Yap Roy King and Valeree Siow in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. They anticipate a challenging match but are eager to demonstrate their growing chemistry on court.
In other news, Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing also advanced to the second round, defeating India’s Sumeeth Reddy and Sikki Reddy 21-10, 21-16. They will next compete against Denmark’s Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund.
Due to Soh Wooi Yik‘s recent toe fracture, Tan Kian Meng and Soh Wooi Yik have withdrawn from the Hong Kong Open, which will be held from September 10 to 15.
Malaysian men’s doubles coach Chen Bingsheng revealed the news to Bernama, emphasizing that the decision on whether the world No. 3 men’s doubles pair will return to the court depends on Soh Wooi Yik‘s recovery progress.
Chen stated that the 26-year-old Soh Wooi Yik is currently recovering well but is still unable to participate in high-intensity court training with his partner.
“He had a scan on Tuesday which showed significant improvement. The bone has healed, and the Malaysian Sports Institute (ISN) had previously stated that he needed to wait for new bone growth for recovery. Now that the bone has regrown, he can gradually resume leg movements.”
“He will not participate in the Hong Kong Open. We will continue to monitor his progress this week before deciding whether he will take part in the China Open.”
Chen made this statement to reporters during the Malaysian national badminton team’s training session today. He added that Soh Wooi Yik‘s toe fracture occurred during the semifinals of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In February 2021, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided to expel Lai from the national team after his mixed doubles partner, Lai Pei Jun, performed poorly in the two World Tour events and the Grand Final organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Thailand. Although he was retained by the national team, Chan chose to stay with Lai as a free agent to continue his quest for the Tokyo Olympics.
In April 2022, Chan and Lai won the Korea Open final in straight sets (21-15, 21-18), defeating hosts Ko Sung-hyun/Yim Hye-won to win the title after five years.
