Top Seeds and Olympic Dreams

The 2024 European Championships saw top seeds making their first appearances on the court today, with crucial matches for players seeking final key victories on their road to Paris, as well as all mixed doubles pairs aiming for quarterfinal spots.


Among the highlights, top seed Viktor Axelsen convincingly defeated local favorite Kai Schäfer with a score of 21-12, 21-12. The second-seeded mixed doubles pair, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue, who were silver medalists at the 2022 European Championships, also started strong with a 21-17, 21-11 victory over Serbia’s Mihajlo Tomic and Andjela Vitman.

Besides battling for advancement to the next stage of the competition, some players are fighting for Olympic qualification. Czech player Tereza Svabikova secured her spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a hard-fought victory over Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova, winning 28-26, 21-19.
