Two Days to Go
In just two days, Europe’s finest badminton players will gather in Saarbrücken for the 2024 European Badminton Championships, held from April 8 to 14.
This event promises not only top-tier badminton but also a feast of entertainment, with three reigning champions defending their titles on German soil. Spain’s Carolina Marin aims for an unprecedented seventh consecutive women’s singles title, while Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen seeks to continue his dominance with a fourth European Championship win.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics just three months away, this championship serves as a critical gauge of European players’ form.
Marin Aims for Historic Seventh Title Carolina Marin is poised to set a new record in European badminton history. Having won the championship six times in a row, and fresh off victories at the All England Open and Swiss Open, she enters this tournament in peak condition. Marin opted out of the Madrid Spain Masters to focus on preparing for the European Championships, where she is expected to make history.
In the women’s singles competition, Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt aims to surpass her previous bronze medal achievement. Blichfeldt recently won the Super 300 title at the German Open and is a strong contender. Fellow Dane Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt, the third seed, and three-time European silver medalist Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland also have their sights set on the title.
Denmark’s Dominance and Strong French Challengers In the men’s singles draw, Denmark boasts a formidable lineup with top seed Viktor Axelsen and second seed Anders Antonsen. The Popov brothers from France, Christo and Toma Junior, seeded third and fourth respectively, are expected to deliver thrilling matches and have proven themselves strong challengers to Denmark’s top players. Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke and Magnus Johannesen, seeded fifth and sixth, add further depth to the competitive field.
Doubles: Top Seeds and Host Nation’s Hopes The doubles competition is equally fierce, with Danish pair Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen leading the women’s doubles as the top seeds. Close behind are the second seeds, Margot Lambert/Anne Tran, who have established themselves as formidable opponents. This French pair sees an excellent opportunity to score big, while defending champions, the Stoeva sisters, are also in the hunt for the title. Representing the host nation’s best hope are Linda Efler/Isabel Lohau from Germany.
With Mark Lamsfuss out, this year’s men’s and mixed doubles events will not feature a defending champion, paving the way for new champions to emerge, creating exciting opportunities.
Entertainment Beyond Matches The 2024 European Championships promise not only top-class badminton but also a range of entertainment activities to enhance the spectator experience. Starting Tuesday, April 9, spectators can enjoy a variety of entertainment around the marquee matches, including the YONEX Fastest Shot Challenge, DJ performances, and surprise giveaways, ensuring it will be an event not to be missed.
