Yu Yang

Character Introduction

Yu Yang (于洋) (7 April 1986), a native of Haicheng, Liaoning, is a Chinese female badminton player who graduated from the Department of Science and Technology Communication of the University of Science and Technology of China. She is a three-time World Champion in women’s doubles (2010, 2011, 2013) and won the gold medal in women’s doubles (with Du Jing) and the bronze medal in mixed doubles (with He Hanbin) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but was disqualified by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) during the 2012 London Olympics due to a negative match incident. He eventually announced in September 2016 his retirement from the national team.

Yu Yang entered the Anshan Sports School at the age of eight or nine and received professional badminton training from coach Zhang Qiang; in 2000, Yu Yang and Du Jing represented Anshan in the Liaoning Provincial Junior Badminton Championships, where they were temporarily paired together as a doubles team before the tournament and won the championship; however, they have not been paired together in the national team since then. To 2003, Yu, Du two people on behalf of Liaoning Province to participate in the national badminton tournament, and then won the championship, the national team coach was impressed by their performance, the combination of them into a doubles partner.

Yu Yang and Du Jing’s pair began to make their mark in 2006, winning the Asian Badminton Championships, the Swiss Open and the Uber Cup, among other world tournaments that year; however, Yu missed the Doha Asian Games because she sprained her ankle during the tournament.

By July 2007, on the eve of the World Badminton Championships, partner Jing Du was unable to participate in the World Championships, which is the heaviest Olympic points, because she had a cyst in her abdomen and needed surgery to treat it, which was a big blow to the women who had not yet qualified for the Olympics at that time. Until November, the two only in the China Badminton Open comeback, and in the successive four Olympic points tournament to get three crowns and a second place, to obtain the Beijing Olympic Games qualification.

In August 2008, the duo of Yu Yang and Du Jing represented China in the Olympic women’s badminton doubles tournament in Beijing. As the defending gold medallists, Zhang Jiewen/Yang Wei, unexpectedly exited the tournament on the second lap, the burden of winning the standard fell on them. They easily eliminated Japan’s Reiko Shioda/Kumiko Koshiro in the second round, and then beat teammates Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen in the semi-finals to reach the final. In the final, they played against No.4 seeds Lee Kyung-Won/Lee Hyo-Jung of Korea in the gold medal match and won 21-15, 21-13, winning China’s 26th gold medal at the Games.
In addition, Yu also won the bronze medal in the mixed doubles badminton event with He Hanbin.

In March 2009, Yu Yang played in the All England Badminton Championships and won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event with He Hanbin, defeating the South Korean team.

In August 2010, Yu Yang/Du Jing team played in the Women’s Doubles event of the World Badminton Championships in Paris, defeating their teammates Ma Jin/Wang Xiaoli team 2-0 in the final to win their first World Championships title. In September of the same year, the national badminton team announced the list of players for the Guangzhou Asian Games, and her partner, Du Jing, was dropped due to injury, so Yu Yang switched to her pair with Wang Xiaoli. In November of the same year, Yu Yang and her new partner represented China at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the women’s doubles and team events in badminton, winning one gold and one silver.

The 2012 Olympic badminton tournament changed to a new system, the top 16 qualifying round robin, divided into abcd 4 groups, each group of 4 people, the top two groups to advance to the top 8, the top 8 and then take the top 4, and finally for the final of the first to the fourth place, and the previous single-elimination system is different. Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli were disqualified by the International Badminton Federation (IWF) for negative play at the London Olympics. (However, this disqualification decision is limited to this Olympics and not to any other competition, and the coaches and athletes of the countries concerned will not be penalised in any way.)

In August 2016, Yu Yang competed in the Olympic Games badminton tournament, partnering with junior Tang Yuanzhi in the women’s doubles competition. She conveyed the news of her impending retirement before the bronze medal fight: ‘15 years of sweet, sour, bitter, spicy and salty finally tasted it all, and have no regrets to retire. Thank you for 15 years of experience and everyone around me, thank you instead of parents to take care of my white fat leaders, coaches and many unsung heroes. No matter what you go through, as long as you are still alive, it is not the worst stage or result! Smile to face all the difficulties, sunshine and luck will favour the next you and me. Remember your youth, everything is worth it! The day after tomorrow, the last match of the vocational students, holding hands and partners, smiling curtain call. I can only thank all the friends and fans who care about us. Love you all.’

Later, Yu Yang also in his microblogging review his career: ‘2001-2016 Yu Yang, “Chinese badminton national player”, hundreds of games, three Olympic Games. From obscurity to Olympic champion, from being banned to dropping towels, countless memories are fresh in my mind…Honour and happiness, failure and growth. Thanks to all the friends, fans, media and coaches who supported me along the way. Thank you to my country, the Chinese badminton team, and the person who has helped me the most in my 15 years of career – Li Yongbo.
