Zhang Nan Announces Departure from National Team, Will Continue Competing as a Professional Player

On August 20th, Beijing time, Chinese badminton star Zhang Nan announced on social media that he is officially leaving the Chinese national badminton team and will continue to compete as a professional player. Zhang Nan has won the mixed doubles gold medal at the London Olympics and the men’s doubles gold medal at the Rio Olympics. He is recognized by the Badminton World Federation as one of the most successful players in Olympic badminton history.

“If life could be as beautiful as when we first met, today is a special day for me!
On August 20, 2016, after winning the mixed doubles gold medal at the London Olympics, I also won a men’s doubles gold medal in Rio; my dreams were realized. On August 20, 2022, I will officially start a new chapter in my professional career and life.
Considering my age, physical condition, and the current need for the national team to cultivate more young players, I believe now is the time for me to leave the national team and allow more resources for the younger players. Therefore, I have formally submitted my request to withdraw from the Chinese national badminton team. I sincerely thank the national team for nurturing me over the past 16 years. Regardless of how life continues, my experience with the national team will always be my most beautiful memory and valuable asset.
Because of my passion, I cannot give up! Although I am leaving the national team, I will continue my badminton journey in a new way. After discussions with the Chinese badminton team, Chairman Zhang Jun, and other badminton association leaders, the Chinese Badminton Association has agreed to allow me to continue competing as a professional player.
In the future, I will independently arrange training, competitions, and all related badminton activities. The Chinese Badminton Association will also register me for competitions before each event. I am very grateful to the Chinese Badminton Association for supporting me in finding a new path in badminton.
New choices will undoubtedly bring new challenges, and I will face them fearlessly. I hope everyone will continue to support me as always. Zhang Nan thanks everyone here!
In the future, if the national team needs me, no matter in what capacity, I am always ready to return. Regardless of time and place, I will always be proud to be a member of the Chinese national badminton team and will always be ready to contribute to the team!
