Vivian Hoo Kah Mun
Character Introduction
Hoo Kah Mun Vivian (March 19, 1990) is a Malaysian female badminton player.
In April 2010, Hoo Kah Mun Vivian and Wen Kewei competed in the Women’s Doubles at the 2010 Badminton Asia Championships in New Delhi, India, where they finished second in the final, losing 1-2 to Pan Pan/Tian Qing of China.
In 2011, the coaching staff officially paired Xu Jiawen with Wen Kewei, and the pair reached the quarterfinals of the Thailand and Chinese Taipei Golden Grand Prix, and then defeated two Chinese teams in the Indonesia Golden Grand Prix to win their first international women’s doubles title, which was hailed as the most improved Malaysian women’s doubles pairing by Malaysian media.
In 2013, Koh Ka Man participated in the Southeast Asian Games badminton tournament, playing in the women’s doubles event with Wen Ke Wei. They blew away Singapore’s top women’s doubles pair Hinta Mulia Sari/Yao Lei 2-1 (23-21, 17-21, 21-17) in the semi-finals, before taking down the tournament’s top seeded pair of Indonesia’s Gracia Polli/Nitia Krishinda Maheswari in a thrilling three-set final (21-17, 18-21, 21-17) to win the women’s doubles crown.
In August 2014, Xu Jiawen participated in the Commonwealth Games badminton tournament in Scotland. She and Wen Kewei played in the women’s doubles event as the 2nd seed. In the final, the two of them managed to defeat the No. 3 seeds of the tournament, Vara Gupta/Ash** Ponnappa of India, 2-0 (21-17, 23-21) in the final to win the title.
In September 2014, Koh Ka Man represented Malaysia at the Asian Games Badminton Tournament in Incheon, South Korea. She and Wen Kewei competed in the women’s doubles event and eventually fell to No. 3 seeds Misaki Matsutomo/Reika Takahashi of Japan in the semifinals in straight sets (16-21, 17-21), only managing to collect the bronze medal, but had become the first Malaysian pair to win a bronze medal in women’s doubles at the Asian Games after a gap of 44 years, since 1970.
In June 2016, Koh Ka Man participated in the Indonesia Badminton Premier Superseries in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she and Wen Ke Wei played in the women’s doubles event, and the pair blew away the tournament’s second seed and world No. 2, Indonesia’s Graciea Poli/Nitia Krihinda Makhswari 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) in the second lap , to advance to the last eight. In the last eight, they then knocked off Indonesia’s second-seeded women’s doubles pair Ingea Sita Avanda/Mahadevi Istrani Nyi Ketut 2-0 (21-14 21-19) , making their first appearance in the semifinals of the top tier tournament.
In August 2016, Koh Ka Man competed in badminton at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She and Wen Kewei played in the women’s doubles event and advanced to the last eight with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss in the group stage. They were the first ever Malaysian women’s doubles team to reach the last eight of a badminton tournament at the Summer Olympics. They eventually lost 1-2 (18-21, 21-18, 9-21) to the tournament’s top seeded and later champion Japanese duo Misaki Matsutomo/Reika Takahashi in three sets in the last eight.
In August 2017, Xu Jiawen participated in the New Zealand Badminton Golden Grand Prix in Auckland, New Zealand. She and Wen Kewei played in the women’s doubles event and managed to make it all the way to the final and won the women’s doubles crown, breaking a six-year-long drought of international titles.
In February 2021, she was expelled from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) national team for her poor performance in the two World Tour events and the Grand Final organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Thailand.
