2024 Paris Badminton Open: Loh Kean Yew Defeats Li Shifeng to Reach Quarterfinals
Despite becoming the second Singaporean to reach the Olympic badminton quarterfinals on Thursday, August 1, Loh Kean Yew had no reason to celebrate.
He now faces the defending men’s singles champion, Viktor Axelsen.
“I try not to get too excited because the job is not finished, it is ongoing,” Loh said after defeating China’s Li Shifeng 23-21, 21-16 in the round of 16 at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“I just need to keep focusing on the next match, staying focused, and continuing to play every shot well.” Loh Kean Yew had to give his all to overcome sixth seed Li Shifeng, who led by as many as four points in the first game and had a game point, which Loh saved successfully.
In the second game, Loh gained a nine-point lead and never looked back before facing the world number two Danish player on Friday, who had a bye in the round.
Loh Kean Yew is the first Singaporean to achieve such a feat since Ronald Susilo at the 2004 Athens Olympics. This marks the best performance by a Singaporean singles player in the championships.
The 27-year-old player is on the brink of writing his historical chapter, but Viktor Axelsen is literally and figuratively a cut above. In his career, Loh has a 2-8 record against the Danish ace, who is also a friend.
However, in 2021, Loh defeated Axelsen to win the World Championship, his first major career title. He admitted to having a “secret” plan for Axelsen, which the rest of the world will see.
“I am happy to be back in shape, but as I said, it’s not over yet,” Loh Kean Yew said. “I will play against my good friend—but he won’t be on the court tomorrow.
“I am looking forward to this match because he has a huge advantage today, He has had a rest.
“It’s the Olympics, so I will give my all no matter what. I am still the underdog.
“He wants to keep the title, right? The pressure is on him, not me.
