Character Introduction
Sapsiree Taerattanachai, born April 18, 1992, in Udon Thani, Thailand, is a Thai badminton player specializing in women’s doubles and mixed doubles. She and her partner, Dechapol Puavaranukroh, achieved the world number one ranking and won the 2021 World Badminton Championships mixed doubles title.
Sapsiree began playing badminton at the age of 9.
In 2010, at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, she won the gold medal in women’s singles by defeating China’s Deng Xuan 2-0. Later that year, she also won a silver medal in the women’s team event at the Guangzhou Asian Games.
In July 2013, Sapsiree reached the women’s singles final at the US Gold Grand Prix, where she won her first Grand Prix title by defeating Japan’s Natsuki Matsui 2-0, reaching a career-high world ranking of 14. She also reached the mixed doubles semifinals at the Canadian Grand Prix with her partner Maneepong Jongjit.
After 2014, Sapsiree began focusing more on women’s doubles and mixed doubles. In 2016 and 2017, she, alongside Puttita Supajirakul, won several Gold Grand Prix titles, including in Poland, Thailand, and Switzerland.
In March 2017, she caused an upset by defeating the world number one mixed doubles pair, Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen, 2-1 in the Swiss Open semifinals, and then won the final against an Indonesian pair.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she and Dechapol competed in mixed doubles. They won their group matches against Canadian and French pairs but lost to the British pair and were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In December 2021, Sapsiree, ranked world number one in mixed doubles, and Dechapol Puavaranukroh won the World Badminton Championships mixed doubles final, defeating the Japanese pair Watanabe Yudai and Higashino Arisa 2-0, making them the first Thai pair to win a mixed doubles world championship.
