Character Introduction

Kevin Cordón (born November 28, 1986) is a Guatemalan badminton player. His full name is Kevin Haroldo Cordón Buezo. He has represented Guatemala in four Olympic Games and reached the semifinals in men’s singles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He has also won the Pan American Games men’s singles gold medal twice (2011 and 2015) and has claimed three men’s singles and one men’s doubles title at the Pan American Championships.

In 2009, Kevin Cordón won the men’s singles and men’s doubles (with partner Rudolf Ramirez) titles at the Pan American Championships. In addition to the Pan American Championships, he achieved notable success that year at international events, winning both men’s singles and men’s doubles at the Guatemala International, Santo Domingo Open, and Puerto Rico International.

In 2011, he participated in the World Badminton Championships men’s singles and caused a major upset by defeating the 5th seed, China’s Chen Long, in the first round. He then advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating players from Sweden and Spain, setting his career-best record. Unfortunately, he was defeated 0-2 (7-21, 13-21) by the top seed, Lee Chong Wei, in the semifinals.

In July 2012, Kevin Cordón represented Guatemala at the London Olympics in the men’s singles. He advanced from the group stage after hard-fought matches against Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen and the UK’s Rajiv Ouseph. However, he was eliminated in the first knockout round by Japan’s Sho Sasaki with a score of 0-2 (21-23, 10-21), ending his run in the top 16.

In July 2021, at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics men’s singles event, he defeated Wong Chi Hang, Mark Caljouw, and Xie Shihao to reach the semifinals. Although he did not secure a medal, his performance was the best of his career. Upon returning to Guatemala, Cordón received a hero’s welcome, and the country planned to name a park in his honor for Guatemala’s 200th anniversary of independence.
