Michelle Li Man Shan

Character Introduction

Michelle Li is a Canadian badminton player and the highest-ranked female badminton player in Canadian history. Born in Hong Kong, she immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of six. She now resides in Markham, Ontario, and attends the University of Toronto.

Michelle Li started playing badminton at the age of 11. Her parents recognized her talent and enrolled her in a private badminton club in Toronto, where she received professional training from Hong Kong coach, Jennifer Li. Just one year later, at the age of 13, she won the Ontario provincial badminton championship for her age group, and the following year, she won the national championship in the under-16 category.

In the 2012 London Olympics, Li competed in women’s doubles alongside her teammate Alexandra Bruce. Although they lost all three matches in the group stage and were set to be eliminated, they advanced after Chinese and Korean players were disqualified for match-fixing. Li and Bruce then won their quarterfinal match against Australia’s Leanne Choo and Renuga Veeran but lost in both the semifinal and the bronze medal match, finishing in fourth place.

In 2013, she was the runner-up in women’s singles at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold.

In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Li lost 1-2 in the women’s singles group stage to P.V. Sindhu, eliminating her from the competition.

On November 3, 2019, Michelle Li won the women’s singles title at the Macau Open, defeating China’s Han Yue 2-0 in the final.

In 2021, after topping her group in the Tokyo Olympics, Li was eliminated in the round of 16 by Nozomi Okuhara.

In August 2022, at the World Badminton Championships in Tokyo, Japan, Li defeated Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon 2-1 (25-23, 16-21, 21-13) in the third round but lost to Olympic gold medalist Chen Yufei 0-2 (18-21, 17-21) in the quarterfinals. This marked Li’s first time reaching the quarterfinals of the World Championships, and it was also the first time since 1977 that a Canadian advanced to the quarterfinals in the World Championships.
