Toby Penty: English Badminton Star
Toby Penty (born 12 August 1992) is an English male badminton player. In January 2017, Penty first achieved a silver medal at the Estonian International Badminton Championships and followed up with a victory over an Indonesian opponent at the Swedish International Badminton Championships, securing his first international title. By November, he won his first Grand Prix title in men’s singles at the Scottish Open, defeating French 16th seed Lucas Corvee with a score of 2-0 (21-14, 24-22).
Towards the end of 2018, Penty began suffering from alopecia, which caused him to lose almost all of his body hair. This significant change in appearance took a toll on his mental health, leading him to consider retirement. However, with psychological therapy, he gradually improved. After the retirement of veteran Rajiv Ouseph at the 2019 World Badminton Championships, Penty became the top men’s singles player in England and the UK. He represented the UK in the men’s singles at the Tokyo Olympic badminton competition and the 2022 Commonwealth Games badminton events.
On September 6, 2022, Toby Penty announced his retirement, having accomplished what he set out to do, and expressed his desire to become a coach and complete his psychology studies.
