Wang Shi Xian


Character Introduction

Wang Shixian (王适娴) (13 February 1990-), a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu, China, is a Chinese female badminton player who announced her retirement after the 2017 National Games. Individual highest world ranking No. 1 (2nd week of 2011). Her husband is Chen Long.

Wang Shixian was fat as a child, and practiced badminton to lose weight in the first place.In 1998 (at the age of 8), she entered the Suzhou Amateur Sports School, and two years later, she was given the opportunity to try out for the Jiangsu Provincial Junior Sports School, but she was not admitted; at this time, it was in the stage of preparations for the Jiangsu Provincial Games, and Suzhou City then sent her to train at the Shanghai Institute of Physical Education’s Affiliated Athletic School. Eventually, she won the women’s singles title in Group B of the Provincial Games that year, and was invited to join the Jiangsu badminton team again.

In July 2007, Wang Shixian made her international debut at the Asian Youth Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in October, she and her teammates won the team title at the World Junior Badminton Championships.

On 28 June 2009, Wang Shixian defeated Wang Xin 2-1 in the women’s singles final of the Malaysia Open to win her first international open title.

On 20 November 2010, in the women’s singles final of the Guangzhou Asian Games, Wang Shixian defeated national teammate Wang Xin with a score of 2-0, making Wang Shixian the youngest women’s singles champion in the history of the Asian Games.

In January 2011, Wang Shixian played in the BWF Super Series Finals and defeated another teammate Wang Yihan in two sets (21-18, 21-14) to seal the final.

In March 2011, Wang Shixian played in the All England Badminton Open and faced Japan’s Eriko Hirose in the final, winning 2-0 (24-22, 21-18) to win her first ever women’s singles title at the All England Open.

In May 2011, Wang Shixian was selected to represent the national team in the Sudirman Cup Mixed Team Championships held in Qingdao, and the Chinese team successfully won the Sudirman Cup, which was also her first world title.

On 26 May 2012, Wang Shixian won the Uber Cup after China beat Korea 3-0 in the final.

On 27 October 2013, Wang Shixian won the women’s singles final of the French Open Badminton Championships, defeating Thailand’s Pondy 2-0 as the 7th seed of the tournament. Meanwhile, it was also Wang Shixian’s first Superseries women’s singles title after 21 months.

On 10 March 2014, Wang Shixian defeated Li Xuerui 2-0 in the women’s singles final of the All England Open Badminton Championships, sealing the title for the second time after 2011 at the All England Championships.

Wang Shixian was not in bad shape in 2016 after getting the runner-up in three open tournaments at the beginning of the year, but after the Olympic points competition ended in late April, she was still ranked 6th in the women’s singles Olympic points list, positioned behind 3rd-ranked Li Xuerui and 4th-ranked Wang Yihan, who fell out of the Olympic list.

The day before the Olympic list was announced, Wang Shixian was accepted into the graduate school of Beijing Sport University.

On 20 September 2016, according to the official news of the Badminton World Federation, Chinese badminton team star Wang Shixian withdrew from the national team.

During her one-year absence from the national team, Wang Shixian has been training with the Jiangsu Provincial team.In September 2017, she represented Jiangsu Province in the Thirteenth National Games of the People’s Republic of China badminton tournament, where she maintained her all-around victory from the qualifying rounds of the team tournament, the final stage, to the semi-finals of the individual tournaments; she then went all the way to the finals of the women’s singles tournament, and ended up with a 0-2 defeat against Chen Yufei, earning her a silver medal only.

On 28 November 2017, at 10:46 on the 11th day of the 10th month of the lunar calendar, Chen Long and Wang Shixian, two Chinese badminton players, had their photos taken at the Civil Affairs Bureau of Xiamen’s Siming District to receive their certificates.

On 22 June 2019, Chen Long and Wang Shixian welcomed their son ‘Little Coffee’ and officially became parents.
