Character Introduction

Tontowi Ahmad (July 18, 1987) is an Indonesian male badminton player who specializes in mixed doubles. His partnership with Liliana Nasir peaked at number one in the world rankings.

In November 2007, Tontowi Ahmad and Yulianti CJ played in the Vietnam Badminton Grand Prix and won their first ever international Grand Prix by defeating Hong Kong’s Hui Wai Ho/Chow Kai Wah 2-0 (21-11, 21-18) in the mixed doubles final.

In October 2010, he and Liliana Nasir played in the Indonesia Badminton Golden Grand Prix and won the title by defeating the tournament’s 7th seed and teammates, Marquise Kido/Lita Nurita, 2-0 (21-11, 21-13) in the mixed doubles final. In November of the same year, he represented Indonesia at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the mixed doubles (partnering Liliana Nasir) and men’s team events in badminton, winning a bronze medal in the men’s team.

In April 2011, he and Liliana Nasir played in the Indian Badminton Super Series and won the first Super Series title of his badminton career by defeating Fran Kurniawan/Pia Zebadia, the tournament’s No. 3 seeds and teammates, 2-0 (21-18, 23-21) in the mixed doubles final.
In May of the same year, he and Liliana Nasir competed in the Malaysia Badminton Golden Grand Prix, winning the Mixed Doubles final with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-15, 21-19) win over the tournament’s No. 6 seed and Malaysian powerhouse, Tan Beng Soon/Goh Liu Ying.

In March 2012, he and Liliana Nasir played in the All England Badminton Premier Super Tournament, winning the Mixed Doubles Final 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) against Thomas Rebhorn/Camilla Lute Juhl, the tournament’s No. 8 seed and Danish powerhouse.

In March 2013, Tontowi Ahmed and Liliana Nasir played in the All England Badminton Premier Superseries and defended their All England title by defeating the tournament’s 5th seeds, Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China, 2-0 (21-13, 21-17) in the mixed doubles final.

In August 2013, he participated in the World Badminton Championships in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, where he and Liliana Nasir played in the mixed doubles event. He and Liliana Nasir, seeded No. 3, faced Xu Chen/Ma Jin of China, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, in the final, also from another Chinese pair, and they also fought a three-set battle, winning this one in the last crucial moment. They performed steadily to take the match point 2-1 (21-13, 16-21, 22-20) to win the mixed doubles title.

In March 2014, he and Liliana Nasir competed in the All England Badminton Premier Superseries, sweeping the mixed doubles final 2-0 (21-13, 21-17) against the tournament’s top seeds, Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China, to win their third All-England title, and were the first Indonesian duo ever to achieve three consecutive titles in the event.

In April 2015, Tontowi Ahmad competed at the Badminton Asia Championships in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, where he and Liliana Nasir were seeded No. 2 in the tournament, and won their first ever Asian Championships title by defeating Hong Kong, China’s strongest pair, Lee Jin Hee/Chou Kai Wah, 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) in the mixed doubles final.

In August 2016, he represented Indonesia in the mixed doubles event of the Olympic badminton tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, playing as the No. 3 seed with Liliana Nasir. In the final, again facing the previous group stage Malaysia’s Tan Beng Soon / Goh Liu Ying , won the match 2-0 (21-14, 21-12) without any doubt, for Indonesia to win the first Olympic mixed doubles gold medal.

In August 2017, he played in the mixed doubles event with his original pairing of Liliana Nasir. He and Liliana Nasir played as the No. 3 seed, and in the final, facing the top seed of the tournament, the Chinese pair fought in three sets to take down their opponents 2-1 (15-21, 21-16, 21-15) to win the World Championships again after four years, and is also the best pair in Indonesian badminton.
