After Treating Mariska to Dinner, Tai Tzu-ying Apologizes

Tai Tzu-ying recently advanced from the group stage at the BWF World Tour Finals, thanks in part to the assistance of Indonesian player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. Ultimately, Tai Tzu-ying won the gold medal. To express her gratitude, she fulfilled her promise and privately treated Mariska to a meal. However, last Sunday (the 14th), Tai Tzu-ying suddenly issued an apology to Mariska, directly addressing the disruptive behavior of a few Taiwanese fans that had caused inconvenience to Mariska and urging the public to remain rational.

Last Sunday, Tai Tzu-ying posted an Instagram story, thanking her fans for their support. However, she also addressed a rare and serious issue, stating that while dining with Indonesian player Mariska a few days earlier, she learned that some fans had knocked on Mariska’s hotel room door to personally deliver a small gift. Despite the fans’ good intentions, she emphasized, “This behavior was too abrupt and frightening. Later, I found out that the fan was from Taiwan, and I sincerely apologize to Mariska for this incident.”

Tai Tzu-ying repeatedly thanked her fans for their support but stressed, “I hope in the future, when you come to watch matches and support your favorite players, please refrain from similar actions.” She urged fans to cheer at the stadium and support the players vocally, rather than buying gifts, jokingly saying, “My luggage has no extra space, and I don’t want to disappoint those who have thoughtfully prepared gifts. Thank you.”

Last Sunday, Tai Tzu-ying competed in the Malaysia Open women’s singles final but was defeated by world number one An Se-young with scores of 21-10, 10-21, 18-21, finishing as the runner-up. Despite this, her world ranking has confirmed a rise back to number 3, earning widespread applause from fans. In an interview, Tai Tzu-ying admitted, “This could be my last time competing in Malaysia,” but emphasized how much she enjoyed each match at the Malaysia Open.

Earlier, Tai Tzu-ying also expressed online, “Thank you to myself for continuing to work hard and to my strong support team.” With her runner-up finish, she earned 10,200 points, raising her total to 93,736 points. With Japanese star Akane Yamaguchi failing to defend her title, her latest points will drop to 93,517. The newly released world rankings confirm Tai Tzu-ying’s return to the number 3 spot.
