Wong Mew Choo


Character Introduction

Wong Mew Choo (May 1, 1983) is a retired Malaysian female badminton player. Born in Ipoh, Perak, she is originally from Guangdong. She began her professional training in her second year of high school, and was the No. 1 women’s singles player in Malaysia. She is married to Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, a famous Malaysian badminton player.

Wong won the gold medal for Malaysia in the women’s singles badminton event at the 2003 Southeast Asian Games, defeating Thailand’s Saraki Posana.

In 2007, when the China Badminton Super Tournament started, Wong Miu Choo became the biggest dark horse, defeating Chinese women’s singles players Zhu Lin, Zhu Jingjing, Zhang Ning, and finally defeating Xie Xingfang in the final, giving her her first Open Championship title.

In 2008, when the Beijing Olympics started, Wong Mew Choo achieved the best ever result for a Malaysian women’s singles player, reaching her first ever Olympics women’s singles tournament, where she was defeated by China’s Lu Lan in the last 8.

In 2009, Wong Mew Choo won the women’s singles final of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series Finals, defeating Germany’s Julianne Schenk.

In November 2010, Wong represented Malaysia at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the women’s singles and women’s team events.

On April 1, 2011, Wong announced her retirement.

On November 10, 2012, she married Lee Chong Wei. They have two sons, the first son, Lee Ka Him (Kingston), born on April 12, 2013, and the second son, Lee Kai Kit (Terrance), born on July 9, 2015, who is also known as Terrance.
