Character Introduction

Greysia Polii (August 11, 1987) is an Indonesian female badminton player specializing in doubles.She won the women’s doubles badminton title at the 2020 Olympic Games.In June 2022, she officially retired from international competition.

Polly was born in August 1987 in Jakarta. After the death of her father when she was two years old, she moved to Manado, where she was introduced to badminton at school; she soon showed a flair for the sport, winning her first tournament at the age of 6. In 1995, Polly’s mother moved back to the capital city in order to give her daughter better training, and arranged for her to join one of the most prestigious clubs in the region, Jaya Raya Jakarta. During her time at the club, former star Retno Kustiyah recognized her doubles talent and suggested that Polly, who was 14 years old at the time, switch from singles to doubles; she won her first doubles title shortly thereafter, and in 2003, Polly was selected to play for the Indonesian national badminton team.

In October 2004, Polly represented Indonesia at the World Junior Badminton Championships in Vancouver, Canada, winning second place in the mixed doubles and third place in the women’s doubles with Muhammad Reza and Heni Budiman.

In November 2010, Polly represented Indonesia at the Guangzhou Asian Games, competing in the women’s doubles and women’s team events in badminton, winning the bronze medal in the women’s team.

In the 2012 London Olympics Women’s Doubles Badminton Group A, Polly/Meliana Johari were disqualified by the IOC after they played negatively with Korean athletes Kim Min Jung/Ha Jeong Eun, either going off the net or out of bounds without pressure.

In June 2013, Gracia Poli and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari played in the Thailand Badminton Golden Grand Prix and won their first Golden Grand Prix title, defeating Yuriko Miki/Koharu Yonemoto of Japan 2-0 (21-7, 21-13) in the women’s doubles final.

In September 2014, Gracia Poli represented Indonesia at the Asian Games badminton tournament in Incheon, South Korea, where she and Nitia Krishinda Maheswari played in the women’s doubles event. In the women’s doubles final defeated the tournament’s top seed, Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo / Reika Takahashi 2-0 (21-15, 21-9), and is also the third group of Indonesian players to win the gold medal in this event winners.

In September 2015, Gracia Poli and Nitia Krishinda Maheshwari played in the Korea Badminton Superseries and won their first Superseries women’s doubles title by defeating Korea’s new and veteran duo of Jang Ye Na/Lee Sau Hee 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) in the women’s doubles final.

In October 2016, Gracia Poli and Apriyani Lahayu played in the French Badminton Superseries, defeating South Korean powerhouse pair Lee Sau-hee/Shin Sung-chan 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) in the women’s doubles final, the pair winning their first Superseries title.

In the women’s doubles badminton final at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, they played China’s Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan and won 2-0 (21-19, 21-15) to claim gold.

On June 12, 2022, the Indonesian Badminton Federation held a retirement ceremony and exhibition match for Gracia Poli before the start of the Indonesia Badminton Masters final, and Poli officially retired from international competition.
